The SINHALAYA News Agency, Colombo, Sri Lanka : Hardly 6 weeks passed since the Presidential Elections, but during that period we have had plenty of interferences from certain International elements. First in line was the suspension of GSP Plus facility for Sri Lanka by the European Union.
A decision which would have been taken in 18th December 2009 was taken just a few days after the Presidential Election.
EU did not seem to be having a proper, acceptable reason for the delay of arriving into the decision. Simply they suspended the facility. May be they were waiting for the opposition to win the Election. If the opposition has won the Election, most probably Sri Lanka would have got GSP Plus.
So it’s fair enough if one thinks that suspension of GSP Plus is merely politics against the ruling Rajapaksa regime.
Next came the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navaneetha Pillai demanding for an investigation on Sri Lanka for alleged War Crimes. In spite of the UN committee decide with a majority that there is no necessity for such investigation, she has this extraordinary concern on Sri Lanka by going beyond her duty. Her demand coincided with UN Secretary General (UNSG) Ban Ki Moon’s appointment of “experts to advise him” on Sri Lanka.
The latest is the so called “Human Rights Report” released by the US State Department.
Undoubtedly these incidents are loops in the same chain. There is no opposition existing in Sri Lankan political field now. There is something which shows up time to time opposing every other decision of the ruling party but a legitimate opposition is no where to be found. Now the real opposition resides in certain Western Countries. Their local agents work day and night to satisfy their masters; and whenever the West peak into Sri Lanka, UNP and JVP used to get the advantage. In fact the opposition is waiting for some outside interference for Sri Lanka so that they also can get some help.
Instead of “Country before oneself”, UNP and JVP seem to be believing on “I, me and myself before the country ” !
If at all they had this so called “patriotism”, they should have stood by Sri Lanka when Ms. Navaneetha Pillai demanded for the investigation on Human Rights. The opposition should have made a statement insisting her to go by the decision of the UN Human Rights Committee.
This so called patriot opposition continued to be silent when Ban Ki Moon appointed the “experts”. We could not see them calling a press conference and uttering a word in favor of Sri Lanka. Why could not they organize one rally to protest EU for the GSP Plus suspension ? Opposition preferred maintaining grave silence. “The more interference Sri Lanka gets the better for us” – apparently it’s the motto of the opposition now. This lethargic nature of the opposition delivered Sri Lanka a hanging opposition.
Literally speaking, the opposition’s leadership is taken over by the Western countries. UNP and JVP are now happily settled with the West. It’s the West now trying to advise us on what to do and what not to do.
When I was going through the Human Rights Report on Sri Lanka issued by the US State Department, I could recall how the former justice Sarath N. Silva acted when he as in office. He tried to control everything he could. From controlling the positioning of road blocks and all the way down to influence in the fuel prices of Sri Lanka, just as how the US is doing now.
This so called “Human Rights Report” begins with mentioning that the family of President dominating the government. One brother of the President is a Secretary of Defence and another is a senior advisor to the President, the report says.
See who’s talking ? It’s none other than Hilary Clinton, the wife former American President Bill Clinton. If it was not for Bill Clinton, Madam Hilary would not have made to the Presidential Election, and then to State Department.
Bill Clinton’s successor George W. Bush’s father was also a former President. Family concept was in the scene in every such situation. In 1960s the Kennedy family emerged. They represented three generations of Politics in America. John F. Kenney was the 35th President whiles his brother Robert Kennedy was the Attorney General. Their brother Edward Kennedy was a Senator.
The point to be noted here is, even though the Kennedy brothers did not do anything specific in America, the Kennedy name still remains a strong and influential force in American Politics.it was US Senator, Edward Kennedy who endorsed Barak Obama for the Democratic Presidential nomination.
American Political families have had a significance impact on politics in US.
But, sustaining the public attraction and respect just like it was with Kennedy Family for decades is up to the Rajapaksas. However, the Rajapaksas are well ahead comparing with the Kennedy Family with regard to their contribution towards the nation.
It’s unfortunate that the US State Department has put their nose into every other issue in Sri Lanka. A good example would be their unnecessary concern on the ban Sri Lanka imposed on homosexuals. Something which Sri Lankans are least bothered about is a major issue for the US State Department. Homosexual relationships are not legal in Sri Lanka and the authorities do not seem to be paying attention to the issue; that’s what the report states. May be America wants to legalize Homosexual relationships. But the general public is least sensitive to such issues. Homosexual relationships have become illegal in 19th century by a British colonial law. Why on earth America wants to dig into these minor issues ?
The report tells there are already 791 Tamil policemen recruited to Sri Lanka Police. But as far as the recent recruitment of 50 people from Jaffna is concerned, the US State Department expressed their doubts whether these people truly represent the anti-LTTE Tamil alliance or not.
Anybody can understand that people join security forces not that they were forced to but they like the profession. People volunteer to join Security Forces.
But according to this “report” of US State Department, If Sri Lanka to recruit Tamil people to Security Forces, its not enough that those people are Tamilians, but they should be endorsed by the US. Hilarious !
Majority of population lived in Northern areas either supported LTTE or acted against the LTTE. It’s a near impossible task to find somebody who did not belong into any of those sides.
US State Department seem to be having ample time to waste on these negligible issues…
The report also says the property belongs to the original dwellers of Jaffna is lost as the government has allowed non-Tamilians to establish Business ventures within the high-security zones. This is unbelievable. There is no way the government can change the ownership of the property without acquiring them to government. Also the Thesavakamai Law which is still operating in Jaffna has prevented the property transferring to non-Tamil people.
It was the LTTE terrorists who chased away Muslims from their habitats, yet the property belongs to those Muslims.
By using the word ”Non-Tamilians”, does the US State Department mean to say that Sinhalese people are also in the scene ? No wonder, these Westerners always believe on division not about Unity !
This US State Report is full of rubbish. Here comes yet another one. The report bluntly states that in Sri Lankan Courts, it is allowed a confession to be admitted even if it was extracted by torture. In any circumstance even under the Prevention of terrorism Act, in Sri Lanka, no such confession is admitted in any Courts. Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, it is allowed to admit a confession as a piece of evidence, provided that it was extracted by no torture, only by volunteering.
Nevertheless, no court accepts a confession easily. In addition, if the Judge declares such a confession to be a volunteered one, the accused can always go against it by approaching the Court of Appeal or even beyond it, if he is wiling to.
The only act which allowed admitting a confession extracted by torture was The Criminal Justice Commission act on 1970 during the Sirimavo Bandaranakaye regime. But the law was cancelled on 1977.
The next complaint in this American report is against the Sri Lankan President having failing to support the implementation of 17th amendment to the constitution. This 17th amendment is about a decade old and after it was enacted in 2001, many have ruled the country. Starting from Mrs. Chandrika Kumarathunga, then Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, then again Mrs. Chandrika Kumarathunga, and then Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa had ruled the country since then.
But none of them implemented the 17th amendment as it is full of defects. 17th amendment is not a complete act. Even the members of Parliament were not given enough time to debate the issues concerned.
Implementation of this ill-defined 17th amendment will only create havoc in the entire Sri Lankan ruling structure.
Then what is the reason for America to make a big fuss out of it ?
Having paid the “grave concern” on Corruption and Bribery, the American report also alleged that Sri Lanka’s Executive, Constitution and the Judiciary all to be corrupted. Surprisingly, this report has no mention about the huge corruption the INGOs do in guise of Humanitarian missions. I suggest these countries to first look for the corruption happening in the INGOs whom they fund in billions to keep an eye on the corruption and better governance in the system.
If you are accusing someone, make sure you are cleaned !
Last week I disclosed many details about the NGO named “Transparency International”. People who find defects of the government should definitely be less defective.
All these facts could conclude only one thing. It is, the opposition of the Rajapaksa regime resides abroad having their agents locally deployed. That could be the reason for Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka to receive billions of Dollars.
Therefore, it is high time for everyone to be vigilant and understand the reality !
