Goa: International Film Festival Concludes
The special jury award, the Silver Peacock went to Malini Fonseka

Panaji, Dec 2: A Kazakhstan film produced along with Germany, Switzerland, Russia and Poland, `Tulpan' directed by Sergei Dvortsevoy Golden Peacock award Golden Peacock and a cash prize of Rs. 40 lakh, as the curtains came down on the 39th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here on Tuesday.
 
The film based on a life of a Kazakh youth who after completing his naval service settles in Kazakhstan is the official entry for the best foreign film Oscar at the 81th Academy Awards, 2009.


The Golden peacock and the silver peacock award winning director Sergei Dvortsevoy for his film 'Tulpan' (Kazakhstan) and Special Jury award winner Malini Fonseka, actress of Sri Lankan film `Akasa Kusum'seen during the closing ceremony of the 39th International Film Festival of India at the Dinanath Mangueshkar auditorium in Kala Academy at Panaji on Tuesday.


 
The special jury award, the Silver Peacock and a cash prize of Rs.15 lakh, went to Malini Fonseka, actress of Srilankan film `Akasa Kusum' (Flowers of the sky).
 
Sergei Dvortsvoy, director of the Kazakstan film `Tulpan' was given the most promising director's award.
 
The winners were chosen from 15 films from Asian, Asia Pacific and Latin American countries including Indian films"Kanchivaram" (Tamil) by Priyadarshan, "Mahasatta" (Marathi) by Ramesh More, by a jury headed by well known Hong Kong based South Korean filmmaker Peter Chan.
 
Venice Film Festival director Marco Muller, Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz, Iranian actress and director Niki Karimi and Indian actress Tabu were members of the jury.
 
About 225 films from 40 countries were screened during the festival that started on November 22. Over 6000 delegates from all over the world attended the 10-day festival.

Noted Actor Kamal Hassan was the chief guest at the closing ceremony which was attended by Chief MInister DIgambar Kamat and other dignitaries.
 
The prize money fof the Golden Peacock for Best film was substantially hiked from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 40 lakh this year. While the Silver Peacock  prize money has been increased from Rs five lakh to Rs 15 lakh.
