World Rights Day

December 10 has been observed around the globe as Human Rights Day ever since the global rights declaration was issued in 1948.

The Centre for the Study of Human Rights, University of Colombo will commemorate International Human Rights Day today and tomorrow.

A programme under the theme 'Human Rights: Expanding the Agenda in Sri Lanka' will be conducted at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, under the patronage of R. K. W. Goonesekera and Justice Shiranee Thilakawardane who will deliver the keynote addresses on each day.

A guest Lecture will be given by Lord Hodge of the United Kingdom.

The programme will focus on Human Rights in relation to individual, group and political rights gender concerns, economic, social and cultural rights and post tsunami mechanisms.

V. T. T. Thamilmaran, Prof. Jaydeva Uyangoda, Rohan Edirisinha, Prof. Sharya Scharenguivel, Sunila Abeysekera, Dhara Wijetillake, Dr. P. Saravanamuttu, Dr. Mario Gomez, Prof. Savithri Goonesekare, Jessica Howard, Alexandra Owens, Dr. Hiranthi Wijemanne and Javid Yusuf will be among the participants.
