Sinhala Radio on the Web
« on: December 16, 2005, 07:35:51 AM »
Channel One - the Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will today make a giant stride in the country's radio broadcasting history by joining the Internet network to mark the `80th Radio Day Anniversary', December 16, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation's Chairman Sunil Sarath Perera told the Daily News yesterday.

To celebrate 80 years of its existence in the country, a series of programmes has been arranged for the occasion. Sri Lanka's Radio Service commenced in the year 1925 and was later known as the Radio Ceylon assuming the present name Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation thereafter.

In honour of the `80th Radio Day' a function will be held at 3 p.m. today at the SLBC premises where Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa will be the Chief Guest.

A presentation on the theme `Radio is a Public Service' will be made by Professor Wimal Dissanayake, Deputy Director of the East-West Communication Institute who is also affiliated to the Hawaii University.
Sunil Sarath Perera said that a massive short and long term development programme has been mapped out to make radio services more meaningful and people-oriented in keeping with our national and cultural heritage.

Among plans to upgrade the SLBC and its studios using latest technology would be the conservation and data-filing of its Songs and Voice Records Library in conjunction with the Archives Department, naming Studio 10 as the Sunil Shantha Studio in honour of all vintage radio artistes, commencing a new English Service, establishing community based radio services, upgrade and improve Regional Services and commencing exchange programmes with international radio networks.
