Menna sabaa kaviyo ..

"No one can claim that he or she is a poet just because he or she had composed four lines of words.
A poet should necessarily have a fertile imagination, which could come only by having good habits and human qualities, only such a person could be a good poet."
true talents cannot be hidden cannot be taken away or stolen

Mahagama Sekara(1929-1976)

he is one of Sri Lanka's great poets and was a significant figure in Sinhalese poetry. He was also a teacher, lyricist, playwright, novelist, artist, and a filmmaker. He is likely best remembered as a poet and songwriter with several of his works even becoming popular songs in Sri Lanka. His works occasionally have an introspective Buddhist influenced outlook. His poems and songs remain widely quoted on the island nearly thirthy years after his death. His demise at the age of 47 was considered a tragic loss by many in Sri Lankan literary circles.

Mahagama sekara.. He's an all rounder, poetry art n painting, movie maker, lyricist, writer so.. many more..

Monica Ruwanpathirana
Often hailed as the rebirth of the other famous Sinhala poetess, Gajaman Nona , who was born in Colombo, received some education during a time when education was taboo to women, migrated to Matara and exchanged letters written in poetry with Doyly (the Englishman wrote Sinhala poetry) who virtually ruled Kandyan provinces during the early imperial times of the British, Monica Ruwanpathirana hailed from Matara, migrated to Colombo and received her university education there and became the leading poetess of the nation winning many awards from the state. Contemporary poet Parakrama Kodituwakku in tribute to her said she in deed is the reborn Gajaman Nona of our nation.

Monica died at the age of 58 and four of those years she was ailing. But up to her death she was busily engaged in writing poetry.

She started her poetic life by writing , “Both of Us and some others.”

Some of her other celebrated works included, “From a forbidden land”, “The Dreams of Angulimala”, “Your friend-She is the Woman”, “Goddess Pattini, Listen to me” (won the State award for best poetic work for 2002), “The woman Patient and Hypo crates”( won the state award for the best poetic work for the year 2003) , “The verses of Siri Pada”, “The Balance Sheet of Twenty Years”, “Little Daughter” and “Athuru Mithuru” (poetry for children)
She was also a short story writer and the author of 23 books.

A village lass who was born at Malimbada, Matara she received her education at the St. Thomas Girls High School and Sangha Mitta College of Galle and graduated from the Colombo University. Breaking from tradition she wrote free verse in Sinhala..
She was also engaged in research work for a N.G.O for women’s development.
Above all Monica was extremely unassuming and a very friendly person.

Finally she wrote “ Liu Kav dahasakin- Kiyagatha Nohakivu – Yamak Hada ruwagath- Gehaniyak Nidai Mehi” ( A woman is sleeping here- hiding something in her heart- that could not be said- even by thousand poems she wrote )

Gajaman Noona
Gajaman nona was one of the greatest poetess in sl, I fancy her alot, and really like her style of poetry thought I'd post some articles abt her

Gajaman Nona : The legendary poetess

Gajaman Nona, a legendary figure having the ability in writing and reciting impromptu vibrant Sinhala poetry was born in 1758 and was baptised Dona Isabella Koraneliya Perumal according to historians.

Don Francisco Senaratne Kumara Perumal, who became the Gajaman Arachchi of Matara District and who had much to do with the capture and taming of elephants, was her father. He lived somewhere in Hakmana.

Pandit Koratota 'hamuduruwo' was her teacher in Sinhala language, Elapatha Mudaliyar of Ratnapura District who had been earlier a Buddhist monk in the name Elapatha Dhammaratne Thera too was a pupil of the same Koratota 'Hamuduruwo'. This Mudaliyar was very efficient in poetry.

History records that Gajaman Nona (after her husband's demise) and Mudaliyar Elapatha wrote to each other in lovely verse using warm language.

Once Mudaliyar Elapatha wrote to her the following verse to attract her.

Chanda sooriya meni elandage uvana
Inda neela deka meni lamada ena thana
Andakarayata avulu pana mena
Kinda thani yahane nidiyanne nona

In response to this verse, Gajaman Nona wrote the following verse in an angry mood.

Banda mage himi paralowa giya bavina
Ninda apata puruduya thaniyama yahana
Vinda rathi sapatha mathaka nathi vina
Kinda thamuseta vimasanna karana

When Sir John D'Oyley was serving as the Government Agent and Fiscal Collector in the Matara and Hambantota Districts between 1802 and 1806, Gajaman Nona had been much impoverished and she with her children had no proper way of earning her living, wrote to the former in verse seeking an audience and relief to end her poverty and spend a normal life.

Kind-hearted D'Oyley considering her poverty and her literary ability and having much sympathy, granted her a Nindagama, a strectch of land to her to earn a living. It is this particular land in which her statue stands at Nonagama Junction on the main road between Hambantota and Tangalle. However, some historians have stated that D'Oyley had not been authorised to grant lands to natives.

As it had been laid down by some historians Gajaman Nona had been married to 'Thalpe Merenchegei Garadiya Arachchi'. After his death she had been married to Mudliyar 'Hendrick Siriwardena Vijayawimalasekera'. He also died unexpectedly.

Since these sorrowful occurrences, she and her children were looked after by her father. After some time he was killed by an elephant at Kahagala/Kasagala village, a few miles away from Hungama while on duty. This woman with a fair complexion is a great person worthy of commemoration each year today (December 15) as a poetess who has left a permanent mark for her endeavour to spend a decent life amids the male dominant walks of life, inclusive of high dignitaries who pushed her from pillar to post.

She died on 15 December 1814 at the age of 56.

Here's someone who's not much talked about. I call him modern Kumaratunga Munidasa. Though in his 86th year now, he's still an active man in his duties towards our motherland. He has served the Sri Lankan society in a variety of fields as a teacher, poet, lyricist,  historian, linguist, as a member of "hela hawula", autobiography writer, playwright, novel and short-story writer, children's story writer, editor of magazines and dictionaries, lecturer and most of all as a noble man.
Can anyone recall these famous words : "Tikiri kumaru rajasinghe namin raja wunaa..."
He is none other than Arisen Ahubudu shureen. :D
