Journalist Pensions Bill approved

A Bill to launch a pension scheme for journalists was approved in parliament today without a vote.

Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said 100 million rupees has been allocated for the programme. Moving the Bill in parliament, the Minister said governments had taken initiatives to launch a pension scheme for journalists for about 20 years. However, the present government was able to make this a reality through the Mahinda Chintana. Permanent, contract and freelance journalists of media institutions between 18 and 55 years of age can contribute to this programme. He noted that 50 million rupees had been allocated to uplift facilities of media personnel.

Deputy Speaker Geethanjana Gunawardena pointed out that the service of the armed forces as well as journalists, being rendered by risking their lives, is praiseworthy.
