Government rejects LTTE conditions to release Mavilaru water.
09-Aug-2006

Government?s defence spokesman minister Keheliya Rambukwella says every effort is being made to release water of the Mavillaru anicut. The security forces have already reached surrounding area of the anicut. Irrigation engineers are now studying facts to open sluice gates of the reservoir. The minister said that the government is exercising its undisputed right to open the sluice gates and release water for over fifteen thousand families in the area. Minister Rambukwella told the SLBC that he strongly denies the LTTE?s offer, which came through the Norwegian special peace envoy to lift the water blockade. The government has not been officially informed in this regard so far. Imposition of conditions on a basic human need such as water is a dire violation of international regulations. The government defence spokesman stress that being a responsible government, the government cannot succumb to the demands of a terrorist organization those are against humanity.
