Int'l Buddhist Conference on August 11-12

The International Buddhist Conference organised by the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, on The Buddhist way for a better world order" to commemorate the 2550 Buddha Jayanthiya will be held at the International Buddhist Research and Training Centre, Pallekele on August 11 and 12.

The Mahanayake Theras of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters and President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the conference on August 11 at 8.30 a.m.

About 100 academics including the Maha Sangha representing 22 countries will take part in the conference. Arrangements have been made to receive them today opposite the Kandy Clock Tower at 08.00 a.m.

According to Dalada Maligawa Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara, the principal aim of the conference is to make Sri Lanka renowned as a country where the people are peace loving and where Theravada Buddhism is flourishing in its pristine form.

Diyawadana Nilame said the construction work on the Buddhist Centre was expedited to facilitate for this conference. By now Rs. 160 million has been spent for this purpose, he said.(DN)
