e-Reality: The Sri Lankan Experience, the mid-year seminar on Information and Communication Technologies, organised jointly by Computer Society of Sri Lanka and IT and Communications Engineering Sectional Committee of The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, will be held on Wednesday August 16 at Park Premier, Excel World.

The aim of the seminar is to share knowledge and experience, and address the current concerns in ICT industry, with the participation of well-known personnel.

Prof. V.K. Samaranayake, chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency will deliver the key note address emphasising on the government strategy in ICT. The first session will address the regulatory as well as legal matters concerning the ICT industry in Sri Lanka.

The issues related to competition and licensing as well as the fast widening gap between "information rich and information poor" will be presented by the Telecom Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. This will be followed by a presentation on the E-Transaction bill, the legislation introduced to take Sri Lanka towards a paperless society.

The second session will focus on the current technologies for broad band access and sharing of experience in the deployment of wireless technologies in Sri Lanka.

The exponential worldwide growth of technologies such as WiMAX and its applications to the local community will be taken up for discussion. ICT has come to play a major role in disaster management and a leading mobile operator will share their experience in how ICT was used in Disaster management.

Both sessions will be chaired by prominent industry leaders and there will be questions and answer sessions to further discuss on the ideas presented.(DN)
