COLOMBO: The State-run CEYPETCO increased the prices of Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene from midnight yesterday.

Accordingly the price of Petrol is to go up by Rs.5.00, Diesel by Rs.3.00 and kerosene by Rs.2.50. The revised prices would be Petrol Rs.101, Diesel Rs.67.00 and Kerosene Rs.48.00.

Transport and Petroleum Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie announcing the decision to increase the prices said the increase was inevitable as the Government was incurring a heavy loss due to the subsidy.

According to the Minister, the Government is burdened with a loss of Rs.1650 million per month because of the subsidy and this would go up to Rs.3000 million if the price hike is not implemented. "This is not due to the pressure by anybody. This is to sustain the economy by reducing the loss. We regret the hardships that the consumer has to undergo because of the decision.

But we will take alternative measures to lessen the burden," Minister Fowzie said.

The Minister said that RON 87 Petrol which was successfully experimented recently would be available to consumers within three months. This move is expected to lessen the burden on the consumers as RON 87 is a cheaper gasoline which could be used in three wheelers and motorcycles.

Meanwhile, the prices of other lubricants have gone up by Rs.1.00.
