Coming back to an old topic

We never purchased the MiG 29 although Webby claimed that we used these for an attack. Saner counsel prevailed at last.

I miss Searra and his expert comments. Where are you? Still fighting for the cause? Come back and give your expert comments

Up graded F 7 were a failer when it came to intercepting the Zlings. We have to get simpler aircrafts to do it. Something from the WW 2 type as I always harped.

Time to build an ingenious industry to produce an armament that we really require to face the challenges we face. There should be lot of soul searching within Air Force to see why we failed to destroy these Zlings b4 they reached CMB.Telling that they flew at 300 ft is not the answer. We should have had the aircrafts that can fly at 300 ft and bring down the Kurumba Attiya before they crashed into IRD.

Our task is to face the challengers that we forced on. Not to have the best in the market that doesn’t suit our purpose.

Yes Weli,,,
You're correct and we never had used or purchased MIG-29 series fighter jets since The MIG-29's had not reached SL yet.

But, as per available information, the govt. of SL has not yet stopped the purchasing project of MIG29 from russia and they might restart the project as a situation they desired.

At that time, i mean when the airforce has started the "Night Missions" on 15th april 2008 at 23.54 hours for Mullathivu-Oddusudan,
We got the information from the air force sources as "Used Newely Purchased Assets For The Mission" and
It seems the air force had used Night vision devices instead of MIG-29.

Anyhow, we all are with questioned yet since the "MIG-29 Project File Has not Been Closed and anytime can be activated" But, We don't know the date...

Incorrect.

Blame the poor man’s air defense system. SLAF were always under budget for this exercise and under a budget the best one can come up with is a point air defense system, which is always the defender waits for the bogie. But the downside is like our army being able to walk around earth bunds and bunkers, so can the Zlings with the point air defense system. Like say they chose to hug the ocean all the way to Colombo with an altitude of just 20m making the radars blind. That’s called nap of the earth flight and is the same tactic used by our helos to evade SAM fire. In the zling case it blinds the radars till it cuts inland and reaches the 100m mark due to ground debris.

To address this you need a multi layered air defense system and that is where interceptors come in. For that you need aircraft with an air radar. With slow speed and endurance of the WWII aircraft you have in mind, it will only become a point defence system. And consider the overall threat. How will smaller aircraft intercept the intel warnings of a An32 type cargo aircraft? Surely the LTTE had larger aircraft in mind to build kilometre long runways. You don’t invest on assets thinking short term. That is quite brash.

Existing F7s were never upgraded instead F7Gs were brought in. The difference being it having an air radar, the KLJ6E. In comparison to the deal of the fulcrums one can say the F-7Gs were acquired free of charge. And the performance is telling. The radar is quite small compared to Doppler radars in other platforms. And usually the technical specs against these are documented against fighter size aircraft under optimal conditions. So against a zling size aircraft in even light drizzle it will not be optimal. For example the day the Zlings struck the Trinco Naval billet. Further add in other limitations such as the narrow bore sight of the armaments.

With the F7G you cant get any simpler in air defence. It was the simplest of forms. The simplest of a multi layered air defence network. And it did indeed score a kill.  :)

Hi Sierra,

Nice to see you back. Now that the Air War has come to its end, I hope you will share many of your experiences and indepy knoledge here.

Although the new media said that both Kamikaze Slings were downed by ground fire a friend who was outside Goodwood Plaza hotel that night told us that he saw one of our fighters hooting downwards. He hadn't seen the Sling, but we had doubts about this story as the Gov News maintained that it was down due ground fire.

Were you fling it?

You can clearly see on the released video segments F7s in the background and yes they attempted to intercept it with the canon from the classic 6’0 clock position without any luck. Mind you the zlings were flying low amidst the clutter of buildings and with the ack-ack fire from the harbour and the surroundings it was paramount the F7 not to be in the field of fire. Also it is not only the Z143 in the field of view of the pilot. He has to filter out the Z143 from the background clutter of the city as well as to be remarkably professional not to be trigger happy as any missed 30mm cannon fire will impact the installations beneath. It was all done with minimal collateral damage except for a unlucky few who fell victim to the metal returning back to earth.

It all hangs on how convincing the Chinese and their machines are. Trips to China hasn't ceased despite the official end of war.  :)
