Title: Yahoo to Test Audio Search
Post by: Sachitha on August 04, 2005, 07:29:28 PM
Yahoo has announced that it will start testing a new audio search feature, which will sieve through millions of songs, offered by   Internet music services such as Napster, Rhapsody and iTunes.

This free service, which shows-off an index of over 50 million audio files comprising interviews, speeches and newscasts posted online, as well as a large number of net podcasts, can be accessed at The audio file content is identified through "metadata" embedded in the files.

Audio files can be found through existing search engines like America Online's Singing Fish and Blinkx. However, Yahoo maintains that its search feature is the most comprehensive, since the company has permission to enlist a wide variety of downloadable songs provided by almost all the top music services on the net.

According to reports, the new feature comes only 3 months after Yahoo's introduction of its subscription service, allowing users to download all the songs they want for $6.99 per month, a price much lower than similar services offered by RealNetworks' Rhapsody and Napster.

It is believed that Yahoo's foray into audio search is due to the company's increasing emphasis on indexing online video, and the need to attract and retain users in the face of stiff competition so that more money can be made out of selling ads.
