SRI Lanka Army, well admired and recognized for its gallantry and military capability turns 60 years of age on 10th October 2009.

Elaborate and multifarious arrangements are underway to mark this milestone, giving preference to customary religious observances of major denominations beginning 2nd October 2009 under the theme “Victory through Commitment, Dedication, Sacrifice and Professionalism ”.

The modern Army counts its birth after its founding in 1949 as a commonwealth force of the post-independent Ceylon and this maturity of the Army came about as a result of its dedication, professionalism and commitment to the cause. The Army has received recognition as a troop-contributing country to the UN and other member states and its extensive roles in de-mining, humanitarian services, national emergencies, etc, needles to mention, have already received commendation and laurels from all quarters.

Sri Lanka Army, defeating the cycle of LTTE terrorism that gripped this country for over 30 years emerged more victorious and grabbed the attention of the entire world. It has now become a legend and a role model in its own times as the world began to admire Army achievements.

The inaugural 60th anniversary Flag Blessing Ceremony on all Army units at the Sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi precincts in Anuradhapura will take place on 2nd October 2009, Islamic religious observances at Davatagaha Jumma Mosque on 5th October 2009, Hindu religious observances at Sri Bala Selvanayagam Moorthi Kovil in Maradana on 6th October 2009 and the Christian Service at Cathedral Church in Colombo 07 on 7th October 2009 as the first phase of the programme.

Army Day (October 10) events include a Guard of Honour accorded to the Commander of the Army, troop address of the Commander, launching of the Army History Book (1999 – 2009), issue of the Anniversary stamp and the first-day cover, issue of the commemorative coin, commander’s visit to Military Hospital to see recuperating soldiers and also an all-night Pirith Chanting at Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Panagoda.

As a part of the military tradition, a Guard of Honour for the Chief of Defence Staff will get underway at Army Headquarters on 12th October 2009.

Celebrations are expected to reach their apex with the ceremonial opening of the Grand Army Exhibition on 3rd October 2009. This exhibition, a mega event that displays the Army evolution, captured LTTE equipment, arms and ammunition, disaster management work, etc will continue till 11th October at the BMICH. The exhibition will be open for public from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. everyday and a ticket for entrance to the site is priced at Rs. 50.00.

The next attraction, the Army Tattoo organized in this regard will commence on 17th October at Kettarama Stadium and continue till 23rd October. The show will be open to the public from 5.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. everyday. This mega display of thrill and excitement will highlight speedy fixing of vehicles, instant construction of temporary bridges, parachute jumps, cultural shows, military display by women’s corps, model simulation attacks and a host of other exclusive talents of elite Commando units and Special Forces. Entry tickets are available at the entrance to the stadium.
