let's know..
Main elements of web hosting are
the bandwidth / data transfer rate and
the disk space.
Disk space is the space in the web server taken by your web site to
store its files.
And the bandwidth is total amount of data transferred to the temporary
folder of the client's browser from your web site plus all the internal
FTP work, downloading and related activities done by you as an
administrator within a given time period.
So the total weight amounts to the total data transfer rate provided to
you by the web service provider and it has a finite capacity.
Similarly the hard disk drive of the web server has a limited space
determined by the physical size of it.
But some web hosting companies do advertise about "unlimited plans" to
say that you get "unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth / data
transfer rate" seem to be attractive but the word "unlimited" does not
mean the "unlimited" word found in English language. This has some other
meaning defined by the particular host. If you check their Terms of Use
(TOU) you will notice that the web host has conditions and constraints
on how you have to use the "unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space".
Clients who have lesser knowledge on web hosting and related activities
find the "unlimited plans" tempting and opt for them at face value.
This is the real story going behind.
Most web sites consume only a small amount of disk space and bandwidth.
In most cases they don't utilize at least even 40% of the bandwidth and
disk space of their hosting plan. Unless it's a dynamic or the web site
does not contain more video and audio data, static web sites consume
very less amount of bandwidth and disk space.
Therefore the web site growing rate of majority of the clients does fit
in within their constraints.
Coming back, as most of the clients do not consume much, there is always
an unused amount of disk space and bandwidth left out in their hosting
plans.
Unused liquidity of the available hosting space is then provided by the
web host for their clients who use disk space and bandwidth extensively.
(overselling is somewhat similar to this method)
As an example:
Two clients share the same disk space and bandwidth provided for one
client. But they are unknown to each other, not aware of how much disk
space actually they were allocated and even how each other's usage would
be.
In other words, if each of them is supposed to get 10GB per web hosting
plan, in actual case both of them will be getting only 10GB instead of
20GB.
However, when the client needs are expanded and started consuming more
and more disk space and bandwidth, then the web host might find some way
or the other to abruptly shut down your web site or charge you extra.
Note that, if every user utilizes their unlimited space and bandwidth,
the host would have to spend an unlimited amount of money to buy an
unlimited number of hard disks to provide space for them. Your web host
is not going to run at a loss for long - they could shut down your
website or even charge you extra.
Hence, plan ahead and decide on your web hosting requirements. You can
always buy more disk space or bandwidth if you need with paying few
extra per month rather than run into trouble with "unlimited plans"
which incurs huge losses.
Choose a web host with great customer support service and who exposes
what they can provide you and what they can do for your business.
