SRI LANKA - mini travel guide

Mask industry of Sri Lankan dates back to the several years with pre-Buddhist civilization.

Masked dance rituals are coming from Sri Lanka's southern coast. These masks are carved of wood and colored with natural hues and resins.

Traditionally these masks were carved by the Edura or the exorcist himself. But now the mask carving trade is developed in Ambalangoda area - southern Sri Lanka aiming the tourism trade.

These marks are in different sizes and complexities as per various ceremonies. The wood used in mask construction also varies depending upon the region and the availability of the materials.

Though Ambalangoda is the best area to experience the masks, Laksela and Lakpahana are some government owned handicraft shops located in many places of Sri Lanka where you can buy masks.
